In today’s fast-paced, digitally-driven world, we often find ourselves feeling isolated despite being more digitally connected than ever. One of the greatest losses of modern times is the art of community—a crucial aspect of our lives that once brought us together, provided support, and created a sense of belonging.

The Lost Art of Community

Reflecting on how we used to parent, we often did it together, drawing strength from our communities. I remember growing up in a neighborhood where everyone knew each other, and the moms would often gather in someone’s kitchen over coffee, sharing their joys and challenges. If one of us kids scraped a knee or needed a ride to practice, there was always a neighbor ready to step in. As highlighted in the book The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness by Jonathan Haidt, there has been a significant shift away from relying on our communities to support each other and each other's children. This shift has left many of us feeling unsupported and alone in our parenting journeys.

Why Community Matters

Community is not just about being in the same place at the same time; it’s about building relationships, sharing experiences, and offering support. In the past, we leaned on our neighbors, friends, and extended families to help raise our children. This collective approach not only alleviated stress but also enriched our children’s lives with diverse perspectives and support systems.
